A family in Kakamega County has been out in the cold for the last three days after being evicted from a parcel of land they have lived on for 19 years.
Mr Alfred Selete, the head of the family, said his aunt had asked him to settle with his wife and children on the piece of land in Bulambo village in Kakamega East Sub-County.
He said they had been farming and taking care of the place before they learnt the land had been sold.
The family moved to Bulambo after selling their land in Shidodo village following a misunderstanding with relatives.
“My aunt has decided to sell the piece of land to a developer who has demolished our house and asked us to leave. We had agreed that she gives me time to raise some money to pay for part of the land but she did not do so,” said Mr Selete.
After the eviction, the family has been seeking shelter and food from neighbours.
Mr Selete and his wife, Celestine, said the incident had disrupted learning for their five children.
Their first born daughter is a candidate in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination at Munasio Girls Secondary School.
DEVELOPER INNOCENT
The developer, Mr Pius Nakoche, had filed a civil case seeking to have the family evicted and structures erected on the land demolished.
Lawyers representing Mr Nakoche served Mr Selete with a notice to move from the land after Kakamega Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng’ granted eviction orders on October 10, 2017.
On Saturday, police officers from Shisasari police post drove to the village and demolished a semi-permanent house and asked the family to leave.
But neighbours defended the developer, saying he had given the family six years to move from his land after he had bought it.
“We are aware that the developer had even agreed to support the family to raise some money to buy a piece of land and build a house.
Acting chief for Ilesi location Isaac Magomere said villagers sympathetic to the family have started raising money to support the family.
“Elders from the village and neighbours are discussing how they will raise some money to support the family which has nowhere else to go to,” said Mr Magomere.
